Mare Rejuvenation Center
Last summer I came up with the idea of The Mare Rejuvenation Center.
The goal was to find a barren mare that people had given up on, and through natural horse keeping, "rehab" her and get her in foal. If I could prove it could be done, I could perhaps start a business. Not that I am in favor of breeding horses year after year, but here in Kentucky, horses are investments - if the investment is not generating a return - it's dumped. Better to be pregnant and have a home - than the alternative.
I contacted a couple farms and one said they had a mare that would be perfect - but that was around the time of the Keeneland fall sale and they never got back to me. However, after I moved to the farm, I was offered two free mares. One that had been bred but never got in foal, and one who had had one foal, which died at birth or was stillborn, then when bred back was pronounced in foal, but either slipped or reabsorbed it.
This project is being documented at Horses A Better Way. However, since the girls live on the farm, they will be mentioned in my blog from time to time.
The mares are Tiz Life, foaled in 2005, (she is the one who has been in foal) the other is More Oysters. Since neither had a good nickname, I call Tiz Life, Beauty, and More Oysters, Maura.
